Day 1
Departing the local area, we make our way south with a lunch stop on route, arriving at the 3* Northfield Hotel with time to settle in before dinner. The hotel is located on the lower slopes of North Hill in Minehead, in nearly 2 acres of landscaped gardens reputed to have been laid out by Gertrude Jekyll. There are wonderful views from the elevated position: from the coast to the Quantocks, Brendon Hills, and indeed Exmoor itself.
Day 2
Today we make our way across Exmoor National Park to the twin villages of Lynton & Lynmouth, connected by the cliff railway, the highest and steepest fully water powered Victorian railway in the world. Picturesque Lynmouth has rows of charming fishing cottages and shops clustered around the harbour, with the Victorian village of Lynmouth perched high on the cliff above.
D, BDay 3
Today we board the West Somerset Railway, our relaxing one-way journey takes us through stunning countryside and coast from Minehead to Bishop's Lydeard. This afternoon we visit Sheppy's Cider Farm, which has been crafting award-winning ciders for over 200 years. We included a guided tour of the orchards, vat house and press house, followed by a guided tasting.
D, BDay 4
Enjoy a day at leisure in Minehead, there are beaches, a fishing quarter, and a historic harbour to explore. Discover the 14th Century church on the hill with its much-photographed historic Church Steps, visit the selection of tea rooms, pubs and independent shops in the town centre, or just take a seat and watch the world go by in the flower-filled Blenheim Gardens, or on the seafront.
D, BDay 5
After breakfast we commence our journey home with suitable stops on route, arriving back late afternoon/early evening.
