Tenby & the Wonders of West Wales

Discover the wild beauty and rich history of one of Wales' most captivating corners on this wonderful five-day autumn break, based at the Victorian gem that is the Giltar Hotel - perfectly positioned on Tenby Esplanade with breathtaking views across South Beach and the mystical Caldey Island. Tenby itself is a delight, with its pastel-painted harbourside townhouses, medieval town walls and cobbled streets to explore at leisure. From here, a feast of history and heritage awaits: the awe-inspiring 12th-century Cathedral tucked into the hollow of St Davids, the smallest and most enchanting city in Britain, surrounded by the hauntingly beautiful ruins of the medieval Bishop's Palace; the charming market town of Narberth with its wonderful independent shops and galleries; and the ancient town of Carmarthen, the oldest in Wales, on its famous market day. The undoubted highlight for many will be a journey on the glorious Gwili Steam Railway, winding through beautiful countryside and wooded hillsides alongside the River Gwili on one of the UK's most picturesque preserved lines. A truly magical Welsh escape.

Hotel

The Giltar Hotel in Tenby is a Victorian gem, perfectly located on Tenby Esplanade. Enjoy unparallelled views of South Beach & the Mystical Caldey Island. After a fantastic stay on the Mystery Coastal Tour this hotel has become one of our favourites.

Day 1

We depart the local area and head west into the glorious Welsh countryside, with stops on route, to our home for the next four nights, the Giltar Hotel in Tenby. We arrive with time to settle in, take in the sea air and explore this wonderful walled town before dinner.

Day 2

Today is all about Tenby - and what a town to explore! One of Wales's most beloved and characterful coastal destinations, Tenby is a place that truly captivates at every turn. Wander the narrow-cobbled streets within its impressive medieval town walls, admire the pastel-painted Georgian townhouses tumbling down to the harbour, and climb to the ruined castle for sweeping views across the bay. Visit the Tudor Merchant's House (NT), browse the independent shops and galleries, or simply find a harbourside café and watch the boats bobbing in the water.

Day 3

Today we venture to St Davids, the smallest city in Britain and one of the most enchanting places in all of Wales. Hidden in a hollow to keep it from Viking raiders, the magnificent 12th-century Cathedral is a breathtaking sight, and the adjacent ruins of the medieval Bishop's Palace are hauntingly beautiful in the autumn light. We then make our way to the lovely market town of Narberth, a hub of independent shops, galleries and cafés.

Day 4

This morning we explore Carmarthen, the oldest town in Wales, with its popular Wednesday outdoor market, medieval lanes and Georgian buildings. This afternoon we enjoy a heritage train journey on the Gwili Steam Railway. Gwili Railway is one of the UK's most picturesque, preserved lines. Set in beautiful countryside with abundant wildlife, the line follows the River Gwili on a steady uphill journey through farmland and wooded hillsides.

Day 5

We depart the hotel and make our way home arriving back late afternoon.
