Anglesey Abbey, Gardens & Lode Mill (NT) - Snowdrops

A passion for tradition and impressing guests inspired one man to transform a run-down country house and desolate landscape. At the age of 30, the future Lord Fairhaven began to create his first home. Wanting to inspire and surprise visitors, he created a spectacular garden with planting for all seasons and a cosy house in which to entertain. Life revolved around horse racing and shooting, and guests enjoyed 1930s luxury.

When you step into this elegant home, you journey back to a golden age of country-house living. You can discover Lord Fairhaven’s extensive collection and how the National Trust cares for it, then explore the domestic wing to see how the staff serving Lord Fairhaven ran his household like clockwork. The celebrated garden, with its sweeping avenues, classical statuary and flower borders, offers captivating views, vibrant colours and delicious scents whatever the season. A visit to the historic working watermill on beautiful Quy Water will complete your day.

Anglesey Abbey has one of the finest snowdrop collections in the country, with 400 varieties of these delicate white flowers, many of which are rare. Take in their beauty amongst a collection of classical statues and wander through the Winter Garden, also in its prime at this time of year.

Snowdrops can be found across the gardens, here are some of the best spots to see them:

The Winter Garden

The first snowdrops to appear are usually found beneath the splendor of the Winter Garden. Generally visible from mid-December, this is a favourite pathway to spot several different varieties of the delicate white flowers whilst also enjoying the sensory planting surrounding them.

The Woodland Path

Along with daffodils and hellebores, the Woodland Path and Woodland Play Area access path provide a natural setting for small clumps of some of our more common snowdrops. If you're heading through either of these paths, keep an eye out for them as they can often spread with each passing year.
